Protect evergreens from winter desiccation
Evergreen trees and shrubs face unique challenges during Long Island's harsh winters. Cold, dry winds and frozen soil can cause desiccation—a condition where plants lose more water through their leaves than they can absorb from frozen ground. Our anti-desiccant treatments create a protective barrier that reduces water loss and helps evergreens survive winter in optimal condition.
Anti-desiccants are specialized products that form a thin, protective film on plant foliage. This film reduces transpiration (water loss through leaves) while still allowing the plant to breathe. The treatment is particularly important for broadleaf evergreens like rhododendrons, azaleas, and hollies, as well as needled evergreens in exposed locations.
Timing is critical for anti-desiccant applications. We apply treatments in late fall after plants have gone dormant but before the harshest winter weather arrives. This typically occurs in November or early December, when temperatures are consistently below freezing at night but above freezing during the day.
Our certified arborists assess your evergreens and determine which plants would benefit most from anti-desiccant treatment. We consider factors such as plant species, location, exposure to wind, and recent planting history when making recommendations.
