Site Assessment
Our certified arborists evaluate your site to determine if vertical mulching is the best solution. We assess soil conditions, identify compaction severity, locate utilities and irrigation lines, and plan the hole pattern to maximize benefits while avoiding existing root systems and infrastructure.
Hole Creation
We use specialized augers or air spading equipment to create the vertical channels. The method depends on site conditions and tree species. Air spading is gentler on roots but more time-intensive, while augering is faster but requires more care to avoid root damage. We select the appropriate method for each situation.
Amendment Selection
The holes are filled with carefully selected materials based on soil test results and site conditions. Our standard blend includes premium compost for organic matter, mycorrhizal fungi to enhance root function, biochar for long-term soil improvement, and appropriate drainage materials if needed. For severely compacted sites, we may include coarse sand or pea gravel in the lower portion of holes to maintain open channels.
Best Timing
Vertical mulching can be performed throughout the growing season, though we prefer spring or fall when soil moisture is typically adequate. We avoid frozen ground and excessively wet conditions. The treatment provides immediate benefits and continues improving soil conditions over several years as organic matter breaks down.
Ongoing Care
After vertical mulching, proper watering is important to help amendments settle and begin improving soil structure. We typically recommend repeating the treatment every 3-5 years in severely compacted areas, though many trees show significant improvement after a single treatment combined with reduced traffic and proper mulching.
