Advanced root zone care using supersonic air technology
Air spading uses compressed air moving at supersonic speeds to safely excavate soil around tree roots without causing damage. This innovative technology allows our arborists to expose and examine root systems, improve soil conditions, and address compaction issues that traditional methods cannot solve without harming the tree.
The Air Spade tool uses a narrow supersonic jet of air to fracture and displace soil while leaving roots, utilities, and other structures unharmed. This selective excavation allows us to work safely in the critical root zone without the damage caused by traditional digging methods.
Air spading addresses soil compaction, one of the most common but often overlooked problems affecting tree health in urban and suburban environments. By loosening compacted soil and incorporating amendments, we improve water infiltration, oxygen availability, and root growth potential.
Compacted soil is a major stress factor for trees, restricting root growth and limiting water and oxygen availability. We use air spading to loosen compacted soil in the critical root zone, then incorporate high-quality compost and amendments. This process revitalizes the soil environment and gives trees room to grow new feeder roots.
This service is particularly beneficial for trees growing in heavily trafficked areas, near driveways and sidewalks, or on sites that experienced heavy equipment traffic during construction.
Many trees are planted too deeply or develop buried root collars over time due to mulch buildup and soil settling. A buried root collar can lead to girdling roots, stem decay, and eventual tree decline. Air spading allows us to carefully expose the root collar to inspect for problems and restore proper grade.
Once exposed, we can identify and address issues such as girdling roots, decay, or improper planting depth. Proper root collar exposure is one of the most impactful interventions we can make for struggling trees.
When trees show signs of decline or instability, air spading allows our certified arborists to expose and examine the root system without causing additional damage. We can assess root health, identify decay or damage, locate girdling roots, and evaluate structural stability.
This diagnostic capability is invaluable for making informed decisions about tree care, risk assessment, and treatment strategies. Rather than guessing about below-ground problems, we can see them directly and address them appropriately.
Air spading enhances our vertical mulching and radial trenching services by allowing us to create channels in the root zone more precisely and with less root damage than traditional augering methods. We can then fill these channels with compost and amendments to improve soil structure throughout the root zone.
Air spading requires skill and understanding of tree biology. Our ISA Certified Arborists have extensive experience using this technology and know how to apply it effectively for different situations and species. We combine air spading with other tree care practices to develop comprehensive treatment plans that address your trees' specific needs.
